ZARAGOZA MEXICAN DELI
María and Pompeyo Martínez are two Mexicans immigrants who left their town in the state of Puebla to come to New York in the late seventies. They struggled with the challenges of the urban environment: Pompeyo used to be a dishwasher and María used to be a seamstress. They were had workers and after having a wide number of jobs, they could finally settle and open a business of their own.

Today that business is called Zaragoza Mexican Deli, located at 215 Av. A, in the East Village, and has been open since the early two thousands, contributing to the cultural diversity of the neighborhood. The place is not also recognized for its Mexican dishes, popular for the inhabitants of the neighborhood, but it’s also a place that allows gathering of immigrants and locals.
Now runed mainly by María and Pompeyo’s son, Ruben, the tiny place has remained as a witness of the constant changes of New York City.
